Barcelona 4-1 Galatasaray: Yamal's three assists power Champions League comeback

Pau Cubarsí asked for total concentration from the first whistle. Barcelona held out for 28 minutes, conceded, and then scored four.

Hansi Flick's side beat Galatasaray 4-1 at RAMS Park on Tuesday night and moved to two wins from two in the Champions League league phase. ESPN counted it as their tenth straight win to open the season.

How Barcelona turned the game around

Alexey Batrakov gave Galatasaray the lead in the 28th minute with a deflected shot from the edge of the area. The hosts kept it until the 43rd, when Lamine Yamal lost possession, the ball broke to João Cancelo, and Cancelo levelled the score on the stroke of halftime.

Barcelona took control after the break. Fermín López headed in from a Yamal cross in the 50th minute. Three minutes later Yamal set up Anthony Gordon, who scored his first Champions League goal in his first start in the competition. Karim Adeyemi ended the contest in the 65th minute with a low shot into the bottom corner, again from a Yamal pass.

Barcelona finished above their 2.83 expected goals, according to ESPN's match report. Yamal produced all three assists in 15 second-half minutes, and that spell decided the match.

What Cubarsí said before kickoff

The 19-year-old defender spoke at Monday's press conference, in comments carried by AS and reported by Goal. He called Victor Osimhen one of the best strikers in the world and said Barcelona would meet him with full seriousness. He expected a loud stadium, a hard opening spell and a Galatasaray side with the quality to hurt them.

Osimhen started but did not score. Batrakov took the only goal. Barcelona did concede, though, and Cubarsí had admitted before the game that clean sheets have been scarce lately and that the team has to improve there. They allowed one goal against Feyenoord in the 5-1 opener and one in Istanbul.

Cubarsí backs Yamal for the Ballon d'Or

Cubarsí also took Yamal's side in the Ballon d'Or debate. "Everyone knows that Lamine is the best player in the world," he said. He added that he could be among the candidates himself after his World Cup and last season, but he is calmer about it, while Yamal draws more media attention.

Cubarsí spoke about his own workload as well. He played a lot of matches at the World Cup and early in the season, and Flick manages his minutes to spread the load. On Tuesday he started in Barcelona's back line.

Galatasaray's start to the Champions League

Galatasaray have no points from two games. They lost 3-1 at Sporting CP on September 9 and now 4-1 at home. The reigning champions of Turkey arrived with a 3-1 win over Kasımpaşa on October 9, after a 4-0 loss at Trabzonspor on September 19. Domestic form has swung between heavy defeat and routine win, and the Champions League has so far offered no relief.

History favoured Barcelona before kickoff. They had won five of eight Champions League meetings with Galatasaray, with two draws and one defeat. This result makes it six wins in nine.

What comes next

Barcelona visit Real Betis in LaLiga on Saturday, October 17. Galatasaray play Gençlerbirliği in the Süper Lig the same day. Flick will use that trip to test the squad again, and Cubarsí's promise to tighten the defence gets its next check there.
